“I suppose it is tempting, if the only tool you have is a hammer, to treat everything as if it were a nail.”

Abraham Maslow

Today, I want to speak directly to the tools you need to be successful; though, not so much as telling you what to have or not to keep, but to bring your mind to the concept of tool diversity—a must-know if you are aiming for success in any field or area of life.

As stated above, and rightly so by Maslow, having a singular instrument in your toolbox will not make it easier for you to be successful. If anything at all, it may make it more difficult.

The simple reason is this. If you have one tool, and that’s all you have, then you cannot help but become restricted by that one tool. Hence, if the challenges you encounter are beyond that instrument then you are left helpless. It is my sincerest hope that you want to be successful and not without help.

The path to success is fraught with many obstacles that often require you to possess more than one tool in your toolbox. Whether it’s with personal development or finance management or investment or starting a business, you need to wield yourself as a Swiss army knife—you need to be capable of handling different situations. Preferably, not through winging it but rather because you have the right sets of tools for any situation.

At this juncture, I will remind you of this common cliché: spend time on investing in yourself. Grow your abilities. Build a formidable toolbox and you’d have set yourself in motion to achieve your goal of success!
